Helping healthcare leaders to achieve their clinical excellence goals for staff development

The demands of todays healthcare environment are fueling the need to effectively and efficiently move staff through a defined continuum of learning: from novice to expert. The need to have highly competent staff directly involved in patient care to produce quality outcomes is critical.

In exploring research on how nurses feel about the education process, the stressors of learning, and the ideal learning environment, we have identified ways in which we can enhance the overall learning experiences.

We have created a blended learning approach, including eLearning, didactic, experiential, practicums and reflective practice, to name a few, that assist hospital educators in implementing sustainable clinical education and learning.

Philips expert clinicians and experienced educators offer innovative learning strategies, which provides an opportunity to facilitate new nurse orientation, and assist in the journey of the beginner staff from basic competency to proficient and then as a specialized life-long learner.

Blended nurse training programs

Nurse Core Development Programs are comprehensive competency-based education programs designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary for new or practicing nurses to work safely and effectively in their specialty areas. Each program provides relevant, evidence-based content within targeted clinical focus areas, supported by an innovative and engaging cloud-based learning environment that tracks and measures learner performance and competency development.

These blended learning programs are designed to support all types of mentoring, content and social learning tools (wiki, discussion boards, chat, blogs, etc.) extending the education experience far beyond the classroom or a single eLearning event.

Emergency department training

Our approach to ED education is both didactic and experience-based.

The didactic component is comprised of classroom time specific to the training program, while also focusing on clinical competencies, behavioral competencies, and skills validation.

Our education also includes clinical oversight, mentoring individuals on the topics covered in the classroom andassuring both competency validation and inter-rater reliability. We can also provide onsite resources to provide real-time feedback, enhancing the skills learned in the classroom environment and embedding these skills in the practice arena.

Innovative Clinical Education Programs

Philips has responded to a need for transformational change in clinical education by developing programs utilizing a learner-centric model—one that embraces needs assessments, identification of practice gaps, development of learning objectives, contemporary adult learning theory, novel delivery systems, and measurable outcomes.

Our transformational learning programs incorporate adult learning principles where learners are actively engaged not only in the education, but the entire change management process. This level of engagement and participation enables the hardwiring of new concepts and practices as well as facilitates a change in unit culture.

How we enable the transformation process

Clinical Expertise

Clinical Expertise
Philips’ team of education and consulting experts works collaboratively with the institution to define the appropriate mix of educational components to include in each training solution. The goal is to optimize the knowledge transfer and competency development that is required to perform safe and effective patient care, which may lead to improved staff satisfaction and quality patient care.

Experience Flow Mapping

Experience Flow Mapping
Experience Flow Mapping is a unique and structured methodology to provide an insights-based view of the patient journey and clinical processes. We map-out the data points and insights gained from deep data analysis as well as stakeholder interviews and workflow observations. The experience flow map visually summarizes the patient journey, areas of concern, and the most impactful opportunities for improvement. These maps are usually the size of a meeting room wall.

A targeted focus on the ED

Our experienced consultants are positioned to understand and address challenges unique to the ED environment. We bring a talented and unmatched pool of emergency care expertise, as well as offer:

  • Consultants with active leadership roles in the national emergency care community.
  • Access to ED professionals and best practices throughout the nation.
  • A unique awareness of how the ED connects with and relies upon the operations of all hospital departments.
  • An interest in forming lasting relationships and building long-term teams among the staff members at each facility.
  • An ability to create strategies that remain effective long after we have completed our on-site engagements.
